26OCT2011 Received ticket regarding degradation of NAVO data.
We received a ticket on this day regarding the degradation of the NAVO altimeter data.
Several 7 Oct Jason-1 data sets provided to us by NASA, containing erroneous orbit location solutions, passed through our ALPS processing quality control checks. All three altimeters (Jason-1, Jason-2 and ENVISAT) have their SSH data referenced to a reference plane that is calculated from Jason-1 and Jason-2 data. A dynamic large scale interpolation process is run every day on 14 days of data to retain large scale features. The anomalous Jason-1 data therefore directly affected this processing for 2 weeks and its effects have been slowly receding for the past week.
NRL made changes to the ALPS quality control checks 26 Oct in the afternoon and tested the modification that evening. They delivered the new software to NAVO the morning of 27 Oct. NAVO tested the software, validated the data sets and placed the new software into operation later that morning. The ALPS quality control checks have been used for 15+ years and this is the first time this particular problem has occurred.
NAVO ocean modelers looked at the NLOM and global NCOM fields prior to the fix and found no major anomalies, so the effects on our forecast products are considered negligible.
--- NAVO sent USGODAE updated files for Oct 7th through Oct 26th
05OCT2011 Due to issues at FNMOC, we missed several MBAY datasets.
